I fancy myself a decent public speaker -- that is, I enjoy public speaking (which I think is a rarity, and in and of itself probably makes me better than the people who tend to be nervous when speaking publicly). I owe much of that to debating in high school.
I also think it's incredibly valuable for anyone in the IT field to learn how to speak publicly. We don't need "people people" who "talk to the engineers so the customers don't have to," I would rather see engineers who could just talk.
